The Monument of the Holy Mother of God was erected on the hill of Yamacha in honor of the mother of Jesus – protector of the city. It was built following the idea of Haskovo municipality and the community of Haskovo raised the money for its construction. The solemn opening of the monument was held on September 8th, 2003, with the participation of His Eminence Metropolitan Arseniy. Peter Alexandrov, Nikola Stoyanov and a team were the artists who built this monument. The 14m high statue is placed on a 17m high foundation, weighs 80 tons and is made of polymer-concrete. In 2004 the chapel “Nativity of the Virgin” was constructed at the base.
In 2005 it was entered in the Guinness Book of records as the world’s largest statue of the Holy Mother of God with the Child. Since 2009, it has been included in the list of the 100 national tourist sites of Bulgaria.
