The monument of Captain Petko Voyvoda – Haskovo

Captain Petko Voyvoda is one of the distinguished Bulgarians who left long – lasting trace in the history of Bulgaria. A leader of the rebels and revolutionary Petko Kiriakov (Captain Petko) was actively involved in the national liberation movement in Thrace and the Rhodopes. Its activity is closely related to the history of the town of Haskovo. An expression of the gratitude of the Bulgarian people to his bright personality is the numerous monuments – 22 in Bulgaria. There are also a lot of monuments in his honor in Greece, Ukraine, the United States and Italy. The monument of Captain Petko Voyvoda in Haskovo is undoubtedly one of the most magnificent – two meters high, made of granite and bronze. The sculptor Stoyu Todorov was the creator of this monument. The monument, officially opened in 1963, is still one of the architectural landmarks of the city.
