The beginning of the 90-year old activity of the Regional Museum of History was started in 1927 with the foundation of an archaeological department or a museum at the Town Hall Zarya and the establishment of an Archaeological Committee. Since 1935, the official name has been “Haskovo Archaeological Museum”. Until 1975, the museum was housed at the “Kirkovo” School and then it was moved into a new building, equipped with fund repositories and exhibition halls. The Regional History Museum in the town of Haskovo treasures up more than 120000 cultural and historical artifacts from the Bulgarian land. Divided in collections with exceptional value from prehistoric, antique and medieval times the artifacts made of stone, ceramics, iron and glass, form the main museum fund. A valuable collection of antique and medieval coins, consisting of more than 22,000 pieces, is the subject of numerous visits. The museum has one of the best ethnographic collections of nearly 15,000 articles – collections of fabrics, folk costumes, jewelry, copperware, agricultural and craft equipment, ritual requisites and many more. The archaeological exposition exhibits unique artifacts from the region of Haskovo that date back to the New Stone Age until the period of the late Middle Ages.
